Buzz Deadline

From the Superintendent's Desk

Marie H. Doyle

Dear Parents,

Parents received MCAS reports in the mail last week.  My sister, the mother of three children, called me to ask questions about her children's scores and to let me know how my nephews and niece performed.  During this call, I was able to answer her questions and realized that you might like to know a bit more about how we use the data received from these lengthy tests.  While the school system uses the aggregate data to compare our progress to similar cohorts, it also helps parents assess how their children performed during a given year.

Overall, we are pleased with our students’ progression through their nine years in Carlisle.  By the time students finish eighth grade, all scores indicate that they have mastered curriculum and excel as top performers in the State.  Each year we examine our work closely by looking at grade level scores.  We examine student responses to specific questions to determine if individuals struggled or if the entire cohort missed information.  This can help guide our instruction.  We also follow trends and watch the performance of each class over time.  Our goal is to see annual improvement.  Each grade level performance varies due to size and unique needs; smaller classes may see more variance in scores as fewer students tend to skew the score more easily.    Sometimes we realize that the curriculum is not aligned, and we make adjustments to help students be better prepared; our curriculum reviews will focus on vertical articulation (across grade levels) as well.  The MCAS scores also help us identify who needs assistance, and we provide MCAS support and Homework Clubs for extra help.  The data also let us know if we are reaching our top students as indicated by the growing numbers in the advanced category as compared to other districts.

The MCAS is one tool that helps us analyze our progress.  If you have specific concerns about your child's scores, please contact his or her counselor for more information. The MCAS is only one assessment tool, but can be helpful to educators and parents in assessing the progress of children.

Sincerely,
Marie Doyle

Principals' Corner

Jim Halliday, Middle School Principal
Patrice Hurley, Elementary Principal

Dear Carlisle Families,

Carlisle’s annual Halloween parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., on October 31st (of course) with grades K-5 assembling on the Plaza. As most parents can well recall, this is a favorite day for children as they anticipate tricking others as they dress “incognito” in their costumes and obtain lots of (often otherwise forbidden) treats. Some demonstrate their altruism by simultaneously collecting funds for UNICEF. I know for a fact that some of us never outgrow Halloween as we continue to dress in costume and decorate our houses on this special day. Just wait until you see the Superintendent’s plan for the administrative team this year! It will win hands down over the Mosquito outfits we wore last time.

As the principals in Carlisle, we are indeed excited to participate in the Halloween parade, one of many well-established, school-based traditions. We invite parents to join us on the Plaza and along the route of the parade to take pictures and experience the fun along with your children as they proudly display their finery and squeal with delight.

Here are the plans:

  1. Students arrive in school on Halloween, not in costume.  (Please advise students that they may not wear evil-looking, scary masks that cover their eyes, or carry toy weapons of any kind.)  They will don their costumes before the parade under their teacher's supervision.
  2. Each grade level (K-5) will be called out to the Plaza, between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m.  Teachers will accompany their classes to the Plaza and stay with their classes to keep them orderly.
  3. At 10:30 the parade begins, at which time Middle Schoolers who choose to dress in full costume and who wish to join the parade should do so if their teachers are available to supervise and thus give them permission to do so.
  4. Each grade-level team (grades 6-8) will determine who will remain with those students who choose not to join the parade with or without costumes.
  5. The route: from the Plaza we will go across the lower parking lot and out the lower exit, turn left to come up Church Street, turn right into the elderly housing parking lot, march up and down this lot, exit the elderly housing lot, turn right and continue up Church Street, turn left onto School Street, enter the Front Circle and return to the Plaza.
  6. Middle School students who have not joined the parade will go outside with their teachers to greet the returning paraders, forming a wide space (middle schoolers on both sides) through which the parade will travel.  The parade will end at the beginning of the Plaza and teachers will return with their students to classrooms.
  7. Although healthy snacks are always appreciated, traditional Halloween snacks will be allowed at this event.

We look forward to this day of community fun and invite you to join us.  Feel free to dress incognito yourselves to trick or delight your own children!

Sincerely,
Jim Halliday
Patrice Hurley

Save the Date: Superintendent/Parent Coffee
Superintendent Marie Doyle would like to invite you to attend a coffee gathering on November 8th at 8:45 am in the dining room. School Advisory Council 07-08 from Patrice Hurley, Principal
It is with great pleasure that we introduce the members of the 2007-8 School Advisory Council (SAC). Their collective skills and experience are both broad and exemplary and will add desired diversity to the council. I want to thank former SAC member and current CSA vice president Hunter Hutchinson for chairing the CSA selection committee for this significant body this year. Hunter served well as a member for multiple years. I’d also like to thank Vera Tice and Nadine Bishop, who are leaving the council, and Alex Krapf , a member last year, who will be able to continue with us this year. The work and advice provided by each of the former and continuing members has been invaluable in moving our school forward.

During the year,  we will review our charge and the past year’s School Improvement Plan (SIP), discuss how we plan to achieve the goals set forth in the SIP for this year, consider additional goals members would like to address, and determine how to best provide outreach to the school and broader community.  All meetings are public and we welcome parent attendance. The meetings occur in the principal’s office at 3:30 pm on the following dates: November 5th, December 19th, January 2nd, February 6th, March 5th, April 9th, May 7th, and June 4th as  set last year in the school calendar. The following are the members for this year. To read the application letters from the parent members, click on the name:

6th Grade Fundraiser
(from the 6th grade teaching team)
The sixth grade class is attempting to raise community awareness regarding poverty and hunger around the world.  As part of this year-long interdisciplinary project, we are taking part in the United Nations Millennium Challenge, which has as its goal to wipe out poverty by 2015.   The advisory groups of the sixth grade brainstormed ways in which we can raise awareness and funds for this project.  The first of our fund raisers will be a coin challenge campaign.  In homerooms, we will have collection bottles, and students need to match adult contributions.  The teaching team thought it would helpful to let parents know of this campaign, in case you start to notice the disappearance of small change.  We are urging our sixth graders to talk to their parents about our class campaign, as part of raising awareness. We shall continue to keep you apprised through the Buzz.

Email Reminder
Email can be a wonderful communication tool, but there are some pitfalls to avoid in using it. Please note that email addresses in emails from the school are not for use by parents or others for any purpose. We encourage room parents and teachers to use the "blind carbon copy" (bcc) option to send group emails to protect the privacy of email addresses. This also applies to email, phone numbers, and addresses in the Husky Handbook. They are to be used for school-related communications only. Thank you for your cooperation!

The Sixth Grade Spaghetti Supper Experiences Another Success!
On behalf of the entire Spaghetti Supper Committee, we would like to thank all of the sixth grade parents who gave so much of their time, energy, funds, and expertise to make last week's event the success it was. Additionally, we are indebted to the administration, teachers, and staff of the Carlisle Public Schools for their support and dedication to our children. We extend a very warm 'thank-you' to each and every donor who contributed to the supper and raffle. Lastly, we offer our congratulations to the sixth graders for doing such a fantastic job selling tickets, promoting the supper in their community, and serving as waitstaff for the evening.
There will be a wrap-up meeting for all Spaghetti Supper Committees on November 13th at 7:30pm at the home of Kathleen Ryder Hauser. All parents of fifth graders are invited to attend this meeting, as we look forward to planning next year's supper.

Friday Night Live – November 2nd 7:00 – 9:30 PM
The first Friday Night Live (FNL) got off to a great start with 230 middle school students in attendance.  Thank you to the parent chaperones.  Without your help, FNLs could not happen.

Hopefully everyone can come out again for more basketball, ping pong, chess, dancing and pizza on November 2nd.  Any Carlisle students in the sixth through eighth grade who did not attend the September FNL are encouraged to attend in November.  Please remember to bring a parent or guardian with you to fill out the required Permission and CORI Release Authorization forms.  No student can attend unless these forms are on file with the Carlisle Youth Commission (CYC).  Guests of Carlisle students are allowed to attend, however, the Carlisle student’s parent or guardian must remain at the FNL to chaperone.

A $4.00 admission fee is collected at the door.  Pizza, soda, and water will be available for a small fee.  The dress code for FNL is the same as is outlined in the Policy and Parent Information Handbook for the Carlisle Public Schools.  Rules followed by the school are in effect and will be enforced.  A parent or guardian must sign out any attendee who leaves prior to 9:30 PM.  All others must be picked up at 9:30 PM sharp. For additional information, please contact PJ Jewell at 978-371-8995 or by e-mail at pliny.jewell@gmail.com, or contact any other member of the CYC.  The CYC looks forward to seeing everyone on November 2nd

Carlisle School Association (CSA) Meeting
The CSA meets monthly in the Corey Dining Room. Meetings are open to the public and all are invited to attend. The CSA organizes and plans a number of events throughout the school year and offers a broad range of activities and opportunities for parental involvement. If you would like to gain an insight into this hard-working group of volunteers and become a part of it, join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 6th at 9:00am. Additional information about the CSA, monthly meetings, and activities, please visit its website at: www.carlisleschoolassociation.org.

 Finance Committee/Parent Meeting
The Carlisle School Association (CSA) recently hosted a Parent Informational Meeting with the town's Finance Committee. The message was loud and clear: Carlisle is in dire financial straits and people must become involved NOW in the process of determining it's economic future.

The problem that Carlisle is facing is not unique -- other towns are seeing similar cut-backs and restrictions and Carlisle itself experienced similar financial devastation in the early 1990s. Carlisle is now in the position of having to seriously consider the path it should take over the next few years and set priorities for its future. With limited growth and lack of creative funding sources, Carlisle will be facing many lean years with regards to the town budget.

So what can a person do? Become informed about the big picture now.  Attend FinCom meetings (look in Mosquito for announcements) or get involved in the "Livable Carlisle Community" project here in town. By the time we get to town meeting in May, the time for decisions and debate will be over with. This must become a priority for all citizens of Carlisle today.

Boxtops
The CSA will once again be participating in the General Mills Box Tops for Education Program. The CSA will earn 10 cents per box top. Please save and clip your box tops and place them in the box labeled "Box Tops for Education" at the Carlisle school library. There will be a prize at the end of the year for the class that collects the most box tops for the 2007-2008 school year. Thank you for helping us help our schools!

  • Or consider making a donation directly to the Foundation earmarked for technology.  Checks can be sent to the Carlisle Education Foundation, PO Box 734, Carlisle MA 01741.

As mentioned in last week’s Mosquito, the school has serious technological needs:

Teachers would have their students using computers in class more often if they were available. Currently, the school has three carts of laptops, where a full cart provides a laptop computer for each student in a class. These carts are shared across nine grades, with four classes per grade. The goal would be to have a cart per grade. How many of us use computers in our work everyday? Our children need to learn how to use computers as tools for their future.

The school has four ActivBoards now. These are "white boards," something like chalk boards, that are connected to the teacher's laptop and the internet and can also be drawn on. The figures, diagrams and examples drawn can then be saved as a file to be sent to the class for notes or improved upon the next day in class. The Concord Public Schools and the Concord-Carlisle High School have ActivBoards in every classroom. These boards are changing how kids are educated.

Questions?  Please email Laura Snowdon at lsnowdon@gsd.harvard.edu. Thank you for your support.
