Dear Parents,
The seven-member School Building Committee has asked the selectmen to call a special Town Meeting this fall to ask whether citizens will approve $3 million for the design of a new school building that would replace the Spalding Building, add classroom space to ease crowding on the campus, and allow for some growth should enrollment increase over the next decade.
Why do we need a new building? First of all, we are overcrowded and need space right now. Even with a slight dip in enrollment this year, teachers still share spaces that are too small; some work in spaces that were previously storerooms. We have children being educated in spaces that are too small and never intended for the purpose. Our math specialist can often be found teaching a group in a hallway while 12 special educators share one classroom. We need more space.
Second, the Spalding Building has reached the end of its reasonable life. This wood-framed structure was built in 1956 to last for approximately 20 years, and now, 50 years later, we can ask no more of Spalding. Our Building and Grounds people do a marvelous job maintaining Spalding, but as teachers and our youngest children know too well, we are subject to leaks nearly every time we have a heavy rain. With roofs and other systems in the building requiring maintenance or replacement over the next few years, we are at a point where the costs of keeping Spalding safe and functional are not economical.
Third, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has stated that it favors projects that are forward thinking in dealing with districts’ needs; they do not want districts to return for funding every five to ten years; the plan favored by the SBC is intended to carry us well beyond the 10-year mark.
The Building Committee has watched the MSBA closely to understand its evolving standards. A Master Plan, required by the MSBA, was completed (available on the school website) and a Statement of Interest has been submitted, so all requirements for potential reimbursement have been met to date. Representatives from the MSBA have visited our site twice to assess our current status rating Spalding a 4, the lowest score possible. A second visit brought a team from the MSBA to conduct a more thorough needs assessment.
The Building Committee has presented three different plans, but has unanimously recommended Plan 3 as the best for the school’s current and future needs. Design costs are approximately 10% of the project cost, which is estimated at $30 million.
Following a discussion on September 25, the selectmen will vote at their October 9 meeting on whether to go ahead with a fall Town Meeting. Please follow these discussions closely via your presence or cable TV, as we need the community to understand the work of the Building Committee.
Sincerely,
Marie Doyle
Dear Carlisle Families,
Many thanks to the CSA for not only growing the volunteer list, but for organizing the Grade Level Open Houses, New Family Orientations, Staff luncheon, Creative Enrichment programming, and both this week and next, for working with us to bring you the elementary and then middle school Parent Nights. One of the Carlisle Public Schools' strengths is this robust community that we value so highly. In our core values, community is stressed in many different ways. Students learn the meaning of community building at the start of the year in their individual classrooms when teachers work with them to develop classroom or grade level expectations, such as the CRAFTY program in grade two. In most elementary classrooms, there are morning meetings, at which time students share thoughts and important events in their lives with classmates and their teachers, develop skills in oral communication, preview the day’s schedule, and discuss important issues as they arise. This process is often formalized through use of the Open Circle Program. Older students are currently involved in the election process for Student Council members and officers. Advisory periods also allow middle school students to work and plan together in building a sense of community. Members of our faculty have already brought teachers together for late afternoon bowling. Soon community service activities will begin to be planned by teachers and students.
We are so fortunate to have a very strong home-school partnership, a vital part of the community. Room parents, library volunteers, chairs and members of the many CSA committees, book fair volunteers, lunch/recess volunteers, etc. all play a very important role in maintaining the vibrancy of our community. Teachers also go beyond their daily responsibilities to maintain the very important home-school connection. They attend CSA functions, support children at evening events such as choral concerts, Math Night, and serve as representatives to the Diversity Committee and School Council, coach and (wo)man after school clubs and activities. We encourage all of you to become involved. Let your child’s room parents know and/or contact me if you would like to become involved in any of our committees or activities.
One of the ways we maintain a strong home-school partnership is by continually seeking to improve communication with families. Sending the Buzz newsletter by e-mail is a much more efficient and less costly way to transmit important information, and it’s usually more reliable than a child’s backpack. If you have changed your e-mail address or have not yet given your e-mail address to the school, you can sign up on-line for class email lists and the Buzz notification list at http://lists.carlisle.mec.edu/mailman/listinfo. Good parent school communication is vital for children’s academic success as well as strengthening the home-school relationship. We are all looking forward to greeting you at Elementary Parent’s Night this Thursday. In the near future, fall conferences will begin. You may have an opportunity to sign up for one on Thursday evening.
Throughout the year, your child’s teachers should always be your first line of communication if you have a question or concern. You can always send a note with your child, call the teacher’s classroom and leave a message or e-mail the teacher. Teachers want to know if there is a problem, and, very often, a quick phone call or e-mail is all that is needed. Dr. Jennifer Lipton, our psychologist/guidance counselor, is also an excellent resource. Afternoon dismissal can be a challenge with many students going to places other than home. We remind all parents of students in grades 1-4 that if you are picking up your child at the close of school, please wait at the flagpole so that teachers may safely put students on the correct buses and then escort your child to you. Be sure to read the newsletter your child’s teacher(s) sends or e-mails home. There is a great deal of important information in each of these newsletters, including an up to date school calendar. Most importantly, ask your children to share highlights of their days with you and share yours with them. We look forward to seeing you on campus!
Sincerely,
M. Patrice Hurley
Dear Parents:
We are in our fourth week of the 2007 2008 school year and all students and staff have moved quickly into the activities of the school year. As I visit classrooms, I am impressed by the high level of work and the cooperation that most students are displaying. The students obviously realize that the energy, time, and effort that they apply to this year’s academic challenges will prepare them well for the academic challenges of future years. Please continue to encourage them to maintain their hardworking attitude throughout the school year.
The extra curricula activities have begun. All of the sports teams are now organized and by the time you receive this edition of the Buzz, each team will probably have played two games or had two track meets. The spirit of all of the teams is very high and I know that the players will represent themselves, their coaches, their families and the school and town of Carlisle in an exemplary manner. Best wishes to all of the athletes and all of the hardworking coaches. Have a great season and take time to enjoy the experience.
As you know, for safety reasons, we require that all middle school students who are remaining after 2:22 PM for an activity that begins at 3:05 PM must be under the supervision of a staff member from 2:22 Pm to 3:05 PM. In order to provide this supervision, we have designated Homework Club Rooms for each grade for Monday Thursday. Students who remain on campus while waiting for the activity to begin must report to the appropriate Grade Level Homeroom Club Room, which is supervised by a staff member. Because of the large numbers of grade eight students involved in after 3:05 PM activities this sports season, we have instituted a second grade 8 Homeroom Club Room in order to keep the number of students in each room to a more suitable level. In that way the supervisors in both rooms are able to work more closely with those students who would like help with their homework assignments.
The Student Council is beginning to organize and the halls are decorated with the names of candidates who will be running for Student Council officer positions this year. This is always an exciting experience for the students.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions regarding school activities.
Sincerely,
Jim Halliday
Elementary Parents' Night will be held tonight Thursday, September 27th. The schedule follows:
Congratulations to Marcella Pixley
Congratulations to 8th grade teacher, Marcella Pixley, on the publication of her young adult novel, Freak. The book has received excellent reviews, and you can read about Marcella and her book at the following link to a recent Globe article: http://www.boston.com/ae/books/articles/2007/09/26/a_lesson_from_the_freak/?page=1.
School Council
The Carlisle School Council is an advisory group mandated by the State Education Reform Act of 1993. It is charged with writing and implementing the School Improvement Plan, supporting the District Goals, and general enhancement of the school community. The Council will be co-chaired by Principal Patrice Hurley and another member. Members serve a two year term and the meetings are held monthly from 3:15-5 p.m. If you are a parent or community member who would be interested in serving on this council, please contact Hunter Hutchinson at 978-369-4187 and submit a three paragraph written statement detailing your interest in becoming a member to her at hunthutch@gmail.com. The deadline for statements is October 3rd. These statements will be submitted to the Buzz and Carlisle Mosquito. If there are more candidates than positions, an election will be held from October 15th through October 19th. Ballots will be published in the October 11th Buzz and must be dropped off at the box in the main office at the school at 83 School Street in Carlisle or postmarked by October 18th. The first School Council meeting will be held in October in Principal Hurley's office.
School Pictures
School Pictures will be taken on Friday, October 12. Order forms will be sent home with students. Parents must fill out all necessary information on both sections of these forms, make a package selection, and enclose full payment in the prepay envelope. (Please be sure to include your child's classroom/homeroom teacher.) Students must bring the prepay envelope with the attached camera card directly to the photographer at their scheduled time on October 12. All students will be photographed for school I.D.'s. However, picture packages will not be produced for students who do not pay at the time pictures are taken. If the photographs are not satisfactory, the money will be refunded.
School Email Lists
The Carlisle School maintains email lists by class to communicate important information to parents throughout the school year. The lists are intended only for use by the school and should not be used by parents for any other purposes. This year we have already added new Kindergarteners to the list serve and to the Buzz notification list, and we have kept the other class lists from last year. If you received messages for your children last year or during the summer, and your email address has not changed, you will not need to do anything further. If you did not get email messages, or your email address has changed, please visit the following website to sign up for your children’s class email list(s) and the Buzz notification list:
http://lists.carlisle.mec.edu/mailman/listinfo
Please note that all class lists will be monitored by school administration.

Thank You to the Carlisle Conservation Foundation
The Carlisle Conservation Foundation has very generously approved funding for Building Conservation Communities Programs in both the third and fourth grades. With the support of science coordinator, Mimi Chandler, the fourth grade team participated in a day-long professional development program entitled The Nature of Science and Schoolyard Ecology over the summer (as did third grade teachers the previous summer). During the course of the school year, the third and fourth grades will participate in fall, winter, and spring classroom programs led by Massachusetts Audubon naturalists from Drumlin Farm. The programs will focus on classroom discovery and habitat exploration and will be linked to units on animal adaptation (third grade) and the ecology of seeds and plants (fourth grade). The mission of the CCF includes conservation outreach to the community in the belief that when students are given the opportunity to connect with the natural world in their local environment they will grow up to be better stewards of the land.

The annual Fall CSA luncheon was held on Tuesday, Sept. 18 to honor the outstanding work of the Carlisle Public School's teachers and staff. Welcome Back Parents of Middle Schoolers!
Tonight the parents of the Elementary School will enjoy the traditional “Welcome Back” night at Carlisle Public Schools. Next week it's your turn!
On October 4th, parents of middle school students will meet briefly in the Corey Auditorium at 6:00pm. Immediately after welcoming remarks by the administration, parents may attend the CSA Fair in the dining room to collect their Husky Handbooks and check out many school-sponsored and local activities for their children. Parent Informational Coffee
The first Parent Informational Coffee, sponsored by the Carlisle School Association (CSA), will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 9:00am in the Corey Dining Room. The topic for this meeting is “How the School Budget Affects the Town Budget”. Guest speakers include Dave Model from Carlisle’s Finance Committee. With the school’s budget being the largest line item in the overall town budget, this is a topic worth discussing and further understanding. Refreshment will be served.
Save Your Receipts!
The CSA and the Carlisle Public Schools are excited to inform you that we are participating in the incredible “Register Tapes for Education” program again this year. This program allows us to earn school equipment at no cost to you! Last year we collected over $120,000.00 in register tapes from Donelans alone, which allowed the Carlisle School to get two cordless microscopes, two inclined stereo microscopes, and some gym/playground equipment with a total value in excess of $1,200.00 for FREE!
This year we are setting an even higher goal of $150,000.00 of register tapes to collect, so start saving those register tapes from Donelan’s and new this year Crosby’s. Please send any tapes that you have collected dated between Sept. 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008 with your child to the collection box in the school library.
Volunteer at Pumpkins on the Common
The CSA has an opportunity to raise funds for the school by participating in a community fundraiser. Any parent of a Carlisle Public School student can assist the CSA in this fundraising event simply by volunteering to work as a Pumpkin Patch Helper for a two hour shift any day between October 13th and October 20th. Read on for more information:
Pumpkins on the Common is a community fundraiser organized by the Carlisle Garden Club. This week long event, from Saturday October 13 through Saturday October 20 is a community fundraiser so that multiple local organizations can join in the fun of selling pumpkins and celebrating our wonderful New England Autumn. Volunteer "Patch Helpers" are needed from Saturday, October 13 through Saturday, October 20. The job of Patch Helpers is to greet potential customers, answer their questions about pricing and help them find just the right pumpkin. Patch Helpers are also encouraged to tell the customer about the wonderful things their organization is doing and how they will use their share of proceeds from pumpkin sales.
Volunteer Patch Helpers are asked to commit to a two hour block of time. Proceeds will be divided among partnering organizations according to the number of volunteer hours scheduled and worked. To volunteer, please call Elizabeth Acquaviva at 978-369-0364. For more information on the event, visit the event website at http://pumpkinsonthecommon.org/.
Save the Date!

In addition to a large array of gift wrap selections, items include holiday gifts, calendars, candies and much, much more. Each student should have brought home a catalog and order form last week.
