From the Superintendent's Desk

Marie H. Doyle

Dear Parents,

Another school year has flown by as rapidly as the speed of light.  Our highlights include:

As our eighth graders prepare to move on, I wish them well as they complete their journey at CPS.  Our staff has witnessed these young men and women blossom over their time, often nine years, on our campus.  We have enjoyed working with this class, and we will miss them next year.   Best wishes to all of these students as they begin their journey through high school.

Best wishes to staff, students and families for a relaxing and safe summer. I hope you find time to ride a few waves and read several great books!

 Sincerely,
Marie Doyle

Principals' Corner

Jim Halliday, Middle School Principal
Patrice Hurley, Elementary Principal

Dear Carlisle Families,

The end and the beginning!  Can you believe the last week of school is upon us?   I truly cannot.  It seems like such a short time ago that we welcomed your children back to school in September. When I look closely, these wonderful children have indeed grown since then by leaps and bounds – physically, emotionally, socially, and academically. There is the confidence of belonging and knowing school as a second home, with loved and trusted teachers, administrators, staff, and friends. There is the pride of accomplishment, from sharing carefully developed portfolios, to the courage evident in presenting individual or group performances, to the empowerment of efforts to support others locally, nation wide, and throughout the world.

I shall miss being a significant part of your children’s lives for the summer months but am content knowing of the many enriching experiences you as their parents will provide. Trips to or visits from family and friends, the cultural enrichment of museums, celebrations, and festivals, developing a new or honing a loved hobby, learning new skills and forming new friendships at summer camps, communing with nature, and most importantly, more unhurried family togetherness time. My only exhortation to families is to continue to support your children in their learning over the summer. Please keep up the reading – all kinds of genres and print and the writing – through journals, diaries, and stories. As Mrs. Perry our math specialist would say – math is everywhere – count, sort, practice operations and constructs. I wish all of our Carlisle families a most wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you in September.

Sincerely,
Patrice Hurley

Dear Families,

I cannot believe how rapidly the school year has flown by.  It feels like it was just last week that I went onto the Mapquest website to first find out how to get to Carlisle and second, to get directions to Carlisle Middle School.  Upon my arrival in the parking lot, I was obviously doing something wrong.  The bus driver correctly gave me the look that told me I was going the wrong way on a one-way drive.

Since then, my experience has been nothing but positive. What a great system!  I have enjoyed thoroughly my year in Carlisle.  The parents are friendly, extremely helpful and supportive.  I can’t believe all the parents do in an effort to assist the teachers in providing quality education and unique, meaningful experiences. Not only do the parents work hard to raise a significant amount of funds to support the education of their children, but they also give freely of their time.  I don’t believe that I have ever seen as many volunteers for a school as those names that are displayed on the “Volunteer Badge Wall” in the main office.

The students are hard working, interested in their education, bright, cooperative, polite, and caring. The teachers challenge their students to use high order thinking skills, and the students respond effectively.  The students want to do well and want to be prepared for the next level in their educational careers whether that is in Carlisle, at Concord-Carlisle, or at another educational institution. I am very impressed with the extra-curricular activities available and with the involvement of most students in one or more of these activities. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with all of the students and observing their growth in each and every endeavor.

The staff at CPS is unique at all grade levels.  It has been a pleasure working with the adults in every position at CPS. Everyone who works at the school truly cares about the youngsters of Carlisle and the teaching and support staff consistently focus on making learning meaningful, valuable, and enjoyable for the students as they progress from pre-school through grade eight. I am consistently impressed with the outstanding way that teachers challenge and encourage their students to do their best and to be “nice people”.  There is without a doubt a definite atmosphere at CPS that all decisions are made in the best interest of children.

I need to especially mention some folks who have helped me daily with completing the tasks associated with the role of principal: Heidi Zimmerman, Sue Pray, Denise Casper, and Claire Wilcox in the Superintendent's office; Sue Robichaud and her staff in the dining facility; all of the members of the special education department and school psychologists with whom I interact daily; and David Flannery and his staff, all of whom are proactive and very responsive to meeting the long term and short term needs of a very busy educational complex.

I would also like to thank Steve Bober for his help with clarifying the schedule and class lists, my mentors, and those perhaps most responsible for making my year at CPS enjoyable and meaningful: Jane White and Bev Woolard, who constantly answered my many questions and provided me with directions as needed.  Their knowledge of what needs to happen and how to do it is certainly a most valuable asset to the school.  Having Claire Wilcox in the next office was also very helpful not only because she is the Technology Mentor for the office area, but also because her insight as to what is really important both in her position as the assistant to the superintendent and in her role as a parent of two students in the school was extremely beneficial to me.

Patrice Hurley, who perhaps bore the brunt of my need for guidance on the Carlisle Way, was invaluable to me on a daily basis.  Patrice is without a doubt one of the finest school administrators that I have had the pleasure of working with. I am forever in her debt for helping me throughout this school year.

Last but not least, Marie Doyle also provided me with constant guidance and advice on a daily basis.  Marie is a wonderful resource for testing ideas, as she is a great sounding board, who is totally in touch with the key issues in education, both generally and in particular in Carlisle. During my career I have had tthe pleasure of working for very effective superintendents, and Marie ranks up there as one of the best.

In closing, perhaps my greatest memory of Carlisle will be that of watching the kindergarten and grade 1 students run up to their grade 8 mentors, friends, and family members and hug them affectionately. This will forever be imprinted in my memory.

Thank you Carlisle for a great year!

Sincerely,
Jim Halliday

New Email Addresses for CPS
The school's internet domain name has changed. We are now “carlisle.k12.ma.us” instead of “carlisle.mec.edu” and all school email addresses have changed to reflect the new domain. For example, tjones@carlisle.k12.ma.us has replaced tjones@carlisle.mec.edu.  Although we have made the switch, messages sent to old email addresses will continue to work for several months, so all emails you send to staff should be received.

To make sure you receive all email messages from the school, you should make some changes to your email program such as, checking your Junk Mail folder for messages from the school’s new domain; adding the senders’ new K12 addresses to your address book, or tweaking your Junk Mail rules or filter settings to allow any messages from “carlisle.k12.ma.us” to bypass your Junk Mail filter.  This is also the last email you will receive through the school list serve with the old MEC address, as all future emails will come from carlisle.k12.ma.us.

We will change the school’s web address to http://www.carlisle.k12.ma.us later this week.  Be assured that during the transition period of several months we are reachable both at the old and at the new addresses.  We will let you know before the old addresses are finally discontinued.

Please note that Carlisle Town Hall employees have kept their “carlisle.mec.edu” addresses.

Lost and Found
There are many lost and found items in the locker rooms and the gym lost and found boxes.  Please empty your lockers, return you lock and check for any missing items.  By June 13th. All items will be bagged for donation and may be difficult to retrieve. Thanks, P.E. staff

There are also many items in the Spalding lost and found area. Please check for your children's belongings before the end of the school year.

Walk to School Day
On Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 the Carlisle Pathway Committee will team up with the Carlisle Public School and "Safe Routes to School", a state program, to sponsor a "Walk to School Day".  We are excited about the installation of the new pathways on our four major roads:  Bedford Road, East Street, Concord Road and Lowell Street.  We would like to introduce the kids and their families to a new option in town.

We invite middle school students to begin walking at 7:15 am and elementary students to start at 8:15 am.  Anyone not along the pathway routes may pick up the walk at locations such as Kimballs, St. Irene's, etc..

There will be 2 "Toll Booths" set up for those kids walking to school along the pathways.   Walkers coming from Bedford Road, East Street and Lowell Street are asked to enter school through the library back trail where a "Toll Booth" will be located.  Concord Road walkers may enter school through intersection of Church Street and School Street where another "toll booth" will be set up.  The first 100 kids to pass through the tolls will receive a special "goodie bag" and all kids walking will receive a raffle ticket.  Once on plaza, students will be greeted with music and more fun.

Carlisle's Pathway Committee and Public School along with the state's "Safe Routes Program" encourage students to walk as a healthy alternative.  We hope students and their families will enjoy this community event.

CSA Luncheon
The school staff would like to thank the CSA for the wonderful spring luncheon. The variety of dishes was unbelieveable, and all the food was delicious. It was a festive occasion enjoyed and apprciated by all. Thank you!

Thank You from Lynn and Daryl

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generosity and thoughtfulness.  Our retirement celebration with Carlisle students and their parents was just plain wonderful.  It was so incredible to see many of the children and parents we have had the privilege of working with over the years hugging us, smiling at us, and making us feel so very special.  We realize that there was a significant amount of preparation for this event and we would like to acknowledge the hard work and time spent on our behalf.  Thank you for your efforts.

We loved our gift!  What a great idea!  Every time we look at our beautiful dogwood trees growing in our yards we will think of how fortunate we have been to be a part of the Carlisle School Community.  We thank you very much.

All our love,
Lynn Walker and Daryl Greenwood.

Math-A-Thon Results
Congratulations to all the students, teachers, and families on the incredible success of our Math-A-Thon.  This year you raised $6, 214.85 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  It is amazing to see the generosity of the Carlisle community year after year.  What an outstanding achievement in which we should all take pride.  These dollars will provide help and hope to children, and their families, suffering with childhood cancer and other long-term illnesses.

Our top fundraiser was Anna Jewell who raised the incredible amount of $440.  She chose a soccer ball as her prize.  I also must mention the awesome efforts of the following students: Connor Lofdahl  $380, Connor Melvin $375, Matt Brennan $265, and Henry Attias $250.

The Math-A-Thon is now in its 29th year.  The program is sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks, who provide free passes to their parks for every student raising $35 or more.

***SIX FLAGS THEME PARK PASSESS ARE VALID THROUGH JULY 25,  2008.***

The Mathathon is just one of ways that our students take responsibility for making the lives of others a little bit better.  The Carlisle community should be proud of their response in supporting our students as they reach out to help other children.

Sincerest thanks to all,
Liz Perry

A message from the school library... Calling on Volunteers!!
A bit on the early side but our school library IS the hub of our school and our teachers and students are anxious to get back in here in the fall....the highlight of my career was the middle school boy last year who wanted to check out a book before school opened on the first day back!!! Next September however we will not have the help of our library aide as this position was cut from the budget. We will really be depending on our volunteers next year to keep our school library program operating as smoothly as it has in the past. If you or someone you know can volunteer please contact me at skelly@carlisle.k12.ma.us. Everyone is welcome but folks who can dedicate a two hour block at least every other week usually are the most comfortable and proficient with our operations. The Carlisle School library is a fully automated member library of the Northern Massachusetts Regional Library System that serves students in preschool through grade eight. A volunteer orientation will be held in the school library on Wednesday September 3rd at 9:00 AM. Please mark your calendar and send your contact information to me. Thanks for another wonderful school year!

Writing Treasury Ceremony -- 8th Grade
This year, the 8th Grade Treasury Ceremony will be held on Tuesday June 17th from 8:10 -9:10. During this moving, coming-of-age ceremony, all 8th graders will be presented with their Writing Treasuries which contain their best work from every year since they started Carlisle Public Schools. The Treasuries have followed them from grade to grade and from classroom to classroom and they contain clear evidence of growth and and development from one year to the next. 8th grade parents are invited to join us in the cafeteria for readings, memories and celebration.  We hope you will join us!

Everyday Math Parent Program

Please join us for a presentation on the philosophy and components of the Everyday Math Program on June 23rd from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the Auditorium. The purpose is to give parents a better overview of the program and increase our common vocabulary.

As you may already know, the Math Curriculum Review Team has decided that we will continue to implement the Everyday Mathematics Program as the core of our math curriculum in grades K-5.   Since a formal program adoption process was never undertaken in the past, we have decided to include a parent portion with out consultant, Jeannene Mason.  Mrs. Mason will also be working with the K-5 faculty for two days June 23rd and June 24th

Spring Re-cap
We are all in full motion with spring activities and starting to think about the summer months ahead. We would like to update you on a few CSA activities that have been happening.  This spring the CSA decided to open the grants process once again to help alleviate some of the budget constraints for next year in the four core subject areas.  We have never asked for proposals from the coordinators before and the CSA Board thought this would be a way in which we could help the school in a new area.  We am pleased to announce the Grants Committee was able to award $25,001 towards textbooks, resource materials, workbooks and other core curriculum items.  We will once again open up the entire Grants Process in the fall to all of the teachers and administration. One of the favorite jobs of the CSA Board is the giving out of grants each year.  The school staff works very hard towards student success each year and we love the fact that we are able to be a part of it through Special Grants and Curriculum Enrichment. Thank you to all of you who help in raising the funds for this mission!

Membership and Fall Events' Reminders
It is once again time to sign up for CSA Membership for the 2008 – 2009 school year.  The Husky Handbook is available to all members.   All of the funds raised from membership dues go towards funding Curriculum Enrichment and Teacher Grants.  Any additional donations you would like to make to the CSA will also help to fund these areas.  You may join the CSA by either going on-line to our web site carlisleschoolassociation.org or watching for the forms in the back to school packets during the first week of school.

Room Parents Needed
If you are interested in being a room parent for next school year (2008-2009), please call the appropriate room parent coordinator at your earliest convenience.  Please call Mary-Lynne Bohn (978-287-1439) for PreK, K, Ist and 2nd Grades; Tricia Massicott (978-371-6407) for Grades 3, 4 and 5; and Timm Brandhorst (978-371-2770) for Grades 6, 7, & 8. The coordinators will need to know the name and grade of the child for whom you wish to be a room parent, your e-mail address, any previous room parent responsibilities, and your phone number. Assignments will be done after move-up day. For overall room parent questions feel free to contact Timm Brandhorst--Head Room Parent.

Book Fair Thanks
Thank you to all who supported the Carlisle School Association Annual Book Fair. From the many volunteers who worked tirelessly, to the patrons who purchased books, we could not do it without your efforts. A special thanks goes to the CSA for providing Cultural Enrichment funds to host guest author and illustrator David Biedrzycki who gave a wonderful presentation to many students. The proceeds of the Book Fair are used to expand the school library collection. Again, we thank the Carlisle community for your ongoing support.

Teens: Calling all Carlisle teens entering grade 7 and beyond: get ready to get wild at the library!  The 2008 Summer Reading Program, "Wild Reads at your Library" is just around the corner.  The Gleason Public Library is asking you to go online and track what you read from June 23- July 31: books, magazines, books on cd, web articles – the possibilities are endless!  Registration begins June 16 at www.gleasonlibrary.org, under Summer Reading 2008.  Log your pages, write reviews and challenge yourself, your friends, even a librarian.  You'll be amazed at how much you can - and do! – read.  Prizes will be given to top readers, creative review entries, and by random drawing.

Adults: Summer Reading is for everyone in 2008. The Gleason Public Library is asking Carlisle's many readers to track what is read from June 23- July 31. Think about it. Log pages when reading for leisure, for work, maybe even track the books on tape or online articles. Keep a running log and submit the total pages week by week at the library.  Challenge family members, colleagues, or the librarians to see how much is read. Offer recommendations for books you do or don't like and learn what others find worthwhile. Participants need only log in online at www.gleasonlibrary.org and click on Summer Reading 2008 starting June 16. Or registration and logs can be handed in in-person at the library. Prizes will be given to top readers, creative review entries, and by random drawing. Read and learn. Read and relax.

Library Hours to Change on July 1, 2008
As of July 1, 2008, the Library Saturday hours will be 10 AM to 3 PM. Also, Monday hours in July and August will be 1 PM to 9 PM. These reductions are necessary due to budget constraints in the 2009 fiscal year. Online resources, such as ebooks, downloadable audiobooks, and research databases of newspapers, academic journals, and periodicals are available all hours, any day of the week. Have your library card handy and find more on our website.

Teen On-line Magazine
The teens of Carlisle middle school deserve a public forum to show off their talents to the town and see what their peers are capable of. There are surely plenty of students at the middle school who keep journals of poetry or sketches, but they may need a bit of encouragement to come out and contribute them. The Teens of Gleason have joined with the Library to form TOGAzine, an online magazine that will be entirely made up of student's artwork and literary pieces. Please give us a hand in prompting students to share their work! If you have any questions, contact Erica St. Peter at estpeter@mvlc.org.
