From the Superintendent's Desk

Marie H. Doyle

Dear Parents,

Springtime blossoms with hope for beautiful flowers and approved budgets.   Carlisle Public School’s Information Sheet, sent to homes last week, highlights our achievements as well as outlines fiscal information for our district.  Hopefully, you had a chance to peruse the flyer as it gives valuable insights into how your tax dollars are used to fund our distinguished school district.

The finalized school budget, approved at Town Meeting on May 5th, retains all of our teaching positions except for two reductions due to a drop in enrollment.   Our first priority is to keep class size as low as possible; our second goal is to provide as much support to teachers as possible.   We are saddened to lose curriculum coordinators, seven aides, a custodian and some supplies due budget constraints.   Yet, we remain committed to providing the best possible education for Carlisle’s children.

Finally, we thank town and school leaders – School Committee, Finance Committee, Long Term Capital Requirements Committee, Selectmen, Carlisle School Association, Carlisle Education Foundation and Carlisle Teachers Association - for supporting our efforts to maintain an outstanding school system during these fiscally challenging times.  We are grateful to the entire Carlisle Community for their collaborative efforts to bring forth a viable budget.

 Sincerely,
Marie Doyle

Jim Halliday, Middle School Principal
Patrice Hurley, Elementary Principal

Dear Carlisle Families,

I asked the 6th grade team to write a few words about this year's Outdoor Education program at Sargent Center. Here's what they wrote:

Once again the 6th Grade Outdoor Education experience was a resounding success.  Students have returned from an exciting week of outdoor activities emphasizing problem solving and team building.  Activities included wilderness skills, aquatic biology, orienteering, and a high ropes course.  The philosophy of the BU Sargent Center for Outdoor Education is founded upon the “4 C’s”, which are caring, cooperation, commitment, and communication.  This supports our sixth grade focus on cooperative learning and citizenship.

Feedback from the students was very positive.  They found that their challenges, both physical and social, were not as daunting as they had feared.  Supported by the outstanding Sargent Center instructors, the Carlisle teachers, and their classmates, students found their goals achievable. Through this experience, students found that setting and reaching goals is exhilarating and confidence building.

I myself had the delightful experience of witnessing first-hand the unique power of the Outdoor Education program.  I arrived at the camp at about 3:00PM on Wednesday.  All of the students were involved in a large group activity with the camp counselors.  It was very impressive as all of the students were fully engaged in the activity and having a fun time with their classmates. That evening I sat with a table of the sixth graders and they taught me the ropes on how things work at mealtime.  Each student has a responsibility before, during or after the meal. The food was very good and I think all enjoyed the meal.  The students taught me the songs that they had to sing and the hand motions that go along with the songs.

Mr. Stamell and I had supervisory duty for the boys’ dorm.  If was an easy duty primarily because the boys were very well behaved and were so tired after all that they had done during the day.  They were all quiet and asleep by 10 PM.  I stayed the next morning for the breakfast and the first activity of which there were variety of experiences that each student would do over the next two days.   The level of excitement was high again and the kids went off with their counselors eagerly for the first event of the day.  I spoke with Larry, the camp director, who was thrilled with how involved the Carlisle staff was with the kids and how well behaved, hard working, and enthusiastic the students were.  I couldn’t help but think what a wonderful experience this was for the kids and I can just imagine the memories that they brought home with them for their week together at Outdoor Ed camp.

Sincerely,
Jim Halliday

MCAS Begins Monday
The second set of MCAS tests begins Monday. Please click here to access the May MCAS schedule. To prepare your children, please make sure they get a good night's sleep the night before the test and eat a hearty breakfast. It is also important that all students take the MCAS, so please be aware of your child's testing schedule when scheduling appointments or other time away from school during this period. Thanks to all parents and guardians for your cooperation.

Save the Date -- Volunteer Appreciation Ice Cream Social
Please mark you calendars for the 2nd annual Volunteer Ice Cream Social. We would like to thank our volunteers for all you do to help keep our school running smoothly. Please join us on Wednesday, May 14th in the Corey Dining Room from 2:30 to 3:30 for ice cream. Meet your children after school and bring them along or come by yourself. We look forward to seeing all our volunteers there.

Parent Reminder
We love to have parents visit school, but we ask that you remember to please sign in at the Main Office before going to classrooms or other areas. The only exception to this is that if you are attending an event involving the whole class you may proceed directly to the classroom.

Student Placement for Next School Year K - 4
The student placement process has begun for those students currently in grades K – 4.  Our goal is to make the best possible placement for every child at the Carlisle Public Schools as we work to create heterogeneous and balanced classes.

Your child’s current teacher will work with the other members of his or her grade level team, including both school psychologists and administrators, to create effective instructional groups.  This is a complicated process that all members of the placement team take very seriously.  Many factors are considered when making these decisions.

If you wish, you may complete the attached form and return it to the Guidance Office in the Robbins Suite by Friday, May 16, 2008.  Your comments should include specific information related to your child’s particular learning style, needs and interests.  Please do not request an individual teacher.  Your letter will be shared with your child’s grade level team members.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Patrice Hurley, Principal, Karen Slack, Director of Student Support Services, or Psychologist/Guidance Counselors Jennifer Lipton and David Hall.

A Note from the Physical Education Department
Spring is here and P.E. classes may be held outside starting May 5th. So that students may prepare for Field Day at the end of this month/beginning of June, K – 8th grade students will be participating in Physical Education classes on the Spalding Field (weather permitting).  Please remind your child(ren) to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and for fitness related activities.  Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and  wear a hat and/or wear sunscreen. Thank you!

Everyday Math Parent Program

Please join us for a presentation on the philosophy and components of the Everyday Math Program on June 23rd from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The purpose is to give parents a better overview of the program and increase our common vocabulary.

As you may already know, the Math Curriculum Review Team has decided that we will continue to implement the Everyday Mathematics Program as the core of our math curriculum in grades K-5.   Since a formal program adoption process was never undertaken in the past, we have decided to include a parent portion with out consultant, Jeannene Mason.  Mrs. Mason will also be working with the K-5 faculty for two days June 23rd and June 24th

8th Grade Slideshow Pictures Needed for Graduation

7th Grade Parents
It is a long standing tradition for 7th grade parents to chaperone the 8th grade graduation dance.  This year the dance will be held on Saturday, June 14th form 7 pm to 10 pm.  This is a great opportunity to see the dance in action for anyone thinking that they may want to chair this event next year.  Please contact Lisa Harris at 371-2494 if you can help.

Bike Safety
Spring weather has arrived, and so have the bicycles. Bicycling is great exercise and a great way to beat high gasoline prices. Because we want everyone to bike safely, April Colson, Occupational Therapist, has posted a slide show on the school website about bicycling safety. Please click here to view the slides.

District Report Card
A few weeks ago we emailed information about this year's District Report Card to all families. If you missed the email and would like to review the District Report Card, here are two links to follow. Elementary Art Teacher Mrs. Levy needs empty cereal boxes for an upcoming project. If you have boxes, please drop them off in the elementary art classroom.

Destination Imagination
On Saturday, March 29th, Carlisle teams competed in the Regional Destination Imagination Tournament held in Ayer High School.

Destination Imagination (DI) is an international program that promotes creative problem solving within a team setting. Over the course of several  months, a DI team works on both a long-term challenge and team improvisational skills. The long-term challenge has specific components that must be incorporated into a short performance. The team then presents their performance at a regional tournament. Destination Imagination allows kids to have fun while solving a problem and working with a team of similarly-aged children.

This year’s elementary team competed in the “Obstacles, Of Course” problem category. Their problem was to design and construct an Obstacle Course and a Vehicle that will travel the course.  They needed to create an original, non-verbal Story about overcoming Obstacles. The elementary team [Jared Scheinberg (3rd grade); Joshua Szczesniak (3rd grade); Brian Szczesniak (3rd grade); Abby Scheinberg (1st grade);  and Heather Szczesniak (kindergarten)] altered the wheels on a remote control vehicle and presented a story with obstacles being jungle animals and their homes.  They made a great showing and did a particularly impressive job in the improvisational portion of the tournament.

This year’s middle school competed in the “Hit or Myth” problem category.  Their problem was to create and present a theatrical performance with an original Story about a Myth, Urban Legend or Folk Tale.  They needed to design and carry out a Myth Investigation that discovers facts about the team’s myth and present these results as part of their Story.  Carlisle’s 7Th grade team (Anya Kaufman, Connor Wilmot, John Knobel, Justin Delgado, Jamie Moore, Satchi Davis, and Tristan Wilmot) chose to investigate the “Bloop”, which was a noise of unknown origin, detected by a deep sea hydrophone off the coast of Chile in 1997.  They took fourth place of eight teams at the tournament.

Congratulations to all and a warm thanks is extended to all the folks that made this opportunity possible for the kids.  Of special note are George Bishop, Walter Hickman and Alex Brewster who volunteered as our appraisers this year, Thanks.

Chesstival
78 kids, 34 from Carlisle, poured into the Carlisle School cafeteria and auditorium late Saturday afternoon April 12th, and had a good time playing chess, kazoos and running around on the plaza. Pre-K children through 8th graders came from as far away as Cambridge, Westborough and Groton to participate in Chesstival, the Carlisle Chess Clubs Spring Chess Festival, an unrated chess tournament oriented toward novices. Players ate pizza and received kazoos, masks and participation certificates.  Carlisle's Rholee Xu won first place in the girls division. Other Carlisle winners include Henry Heddon, grade 6 and Changming Xu, grade 5. Congratulations to all!

Planning for College
Interested in learning more about the college admissions process and how to plan for it?  Kenneth Deitch, a long-time educator and a resident of Carlisle for many years, will speak at the Gleason Public Library on Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m., presenting a program on "A Primer for Parents on College Admissions and the SAT."

According to Deitch, "In the life of any family, planning for college is a major event.  Parents who are well informed and comfortable with it can help provide their child a welcome measure of reassurance, comfort, and stability as he or she navigates this new and challenging experience."

Deitch sees the program as most useful for parents of current sophomores and juniors.  By the fall, those sophomores will be juniors and, in October, most will take the PSAT as an early step on the path to college.  Also by fall, the current juniors will have become seniors.  Typically they will then be focused on the college search, assembling lists and planning visits.

In recent years, Deitch has devoted considerable time to tutoring students in preparation for the SAT and similar tests and to helping students and their families with the college search and other educational planning.  His background includes having been a member of Harvard College's admissions committee as well as headmaster of Pomfret School in Connecticut.  He holds a PhD in economics from Harvard and has done research and writing on the economics of education as well as on various topics in American history.

This program is presented by the Friends of the Gleason Public Library.  The program is free and open to the public.  No pre-registration is required.  To learn more about this program, contact the library's reference desk at 978-369-4898.  This program is part of a series made possible by an Equal Access grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
