Marie H. Doyle

Dear Parents,

At the April 2nd meeting of the School Committee I presented a report on the state of technology at the Carlisle Public Schools. Technology continues to become a more integral part of education throughout the world, including the Carlisle Public Schools, as our teachers expand their use of technical tools each year. We are fortunate to have the support of the Carlisle Education Foundation to help us meet our technology needs. The Foundation has consistently raised funds for technology, and through its donations, we have been able to purchase additional mobile computer labs and electronic whiteboards. The Carlisle School Association has also been supportive of our technology-related requests, as they have provided computer supplies, an electronic whiteboard, and more. We are most grateful to our parent supporters as their generosity has made a sustantial impact on bringing viable technology tools to Carlisle.

Planning for technology has been guided by the Technology Committee, which meets several times a year. We are grateful to the staff and parents who serve on the committee: Nathan Brown, Don Rober, James Ewing, Philip Gladstone, Ginny Lamere, Seema Peterson, Vanessa Gerade, Cyd McCann, Erin Rooney, Carolyn Luby, Claire Wilcox, and Heidi Zimmerman. During our meetings, this group has discussed computing in education, the school's network, the aging computer inventory and its replacement, wireless technology, and electronic whiteboards. A long term plan for purchasing was completed by the committee last year. The Technology Report draws heavily on the work done by this committee as well as our technology staff.

As anyone with a home computer and other technical tools knows, keeping up with technology can be expensive. We believe we have developed a realistic plan and budget for meeting our school's technology needs over the coming years. With the continuing support of the CSA, CEF, and the Carlisle community we should be able to meet our goals. I encourage you to follow this link to the Technology Report and read about our plans, and I look forward to your feedback.

 Sincerely,
Marie Doyle

Dear Carlisle Families,

For this edition of the Buzz, we have a guest writer – C.P.S. Health and Wellness Coordinator and P.E. teacher, Margaret Heigl.  As Margaret has been responsible for championing very successful community service activities for our eighth grade students for many years, we have asked her to describe the program and how it works to our parent community this month. We know that many families engage in community service work together and thought you would be interested in knowing another route by which our school promotes this effort as well.

Please join us in congratulating our eighth grade student body.  This year, Carlisle eighth grade students will perform over 1,000 combined hours of community service. Each student fulfills his/her health class requirement by performing ten hours of community service each this year. Our students found success by building effective collaborative partnerships between our school and other organizations and programs.

For the past seven to ten years, students have been asked at the beginning of their eighth grade year to reflect on how they may combine their past academic, athletic, family and social experiences in creating their own service projects that reflect their appreciation toward the people and programs that have contributed to their overall success while at Carlisle Public Schools.

Students are challenged to focus on their passions, talents and desire to be a contributing member of society while selecting their project.  It is just as important for students to think about their own opportunity for growth and joy while providing a service to others.  The more students enjoy the project, the larger the contribution they’ll make and the more people will benefit.

Some main objectives of the program are to promote academic engagement and achievement, civic attitudes and behaviors and social and personal skills.  Since students are involved in the planning and design of their project they achieve maximum benefits. Students explore the definition of community and service. Through brainstorming efforts, students develop a lengthy list of possible opportunities from which the projects are developed.  This project is the bulk of homework assigned and provides students with structured time to reflect by thinking, discussing and writing about their experience.  This form of active participation allows students to use their skills and knowledge in real life situations.

Examples of some of the volunteer projects students have set up are peer tutoring, raising money/walking for various causes, baby-sitting, serving as coaching assistants, setting up recycling programs, working at shelters, working at veterinary clinics, working on town trails, collecting trash, serving as peer mentors, caddying, doing yard work, library shelving, assisting at math night, leading small reading/math groups, filing, serving as hospital volunteers, shoveling, cleaning attics and basements, assembling materials.

All in all students usually have very positive and meaningful experiences.  Almost all write that this extended learning opportunity was fun, taught them something about themselves and helped them become more empathetic and understanding of the needs of others. There have been instances where students were offered paying jobs based on their success with their projects.  Most had such a positive experience that they continued with the project even after they fulfilled their requirement.

The comments written by the sponsors have all been favorable indicating how hard the students worked and the positive impact it had on their programs.  Due to the large success of the students' work, the program is growing and very much appreciated by the greater community.

Sincerely,
Patrice Hurley and Jim Halliday

Caribbean for Kids on Thursday, April 24
Come and limbo your way into spring with the Gleason Public Library and performers Caribbean for Kids at the First Religious Society on Thursday, April 24 at 11 am. Sing and dance in the aisles to your favorite kids songs set to a Caribbean beat. These energetic performers offer familiar and traditional songs from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago. This popular group will have everyone clapping their hands and stomping their feet to a steel drum and calypso rhythms.  This program is supported in part by a grant from the Carlisle Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and by the Friends of the Gleason Public Library and is suggested for ages 5 and up. For more information, call the library at 978-369-4898 and ask for Children’s.

Kids' Display Space
Calling all Carlisle kids! Do you have a special collection that you would like to share with your friends and the other patrons of the library? Thanks to the Friends of the Gleason Public Library, we now own a large display case that we want YOU to use. How does it work? You sign up at the Children’s desk and you get to fill the case with your special treasures for two weeks. After two weeks, your display comes down and the next one goes up. To kick things off, the first display will be Children's librarian Nancy Boutet's treasured Godzilla collection of movies, beanie babies, and action figures. Come by and check it out and make sure to sign up for your own display.

So what do you collect? Your display can be anything you want –Pokemon cards, special toys, something you have made, artwork, coins, stamps, memories from a trip – it’s entirely up to you. If you have any questions, you can email Nancy at nboutet@mvlc.org or call the library at 978-369-4898. Start getting that collection together and stop by the Children's desk to make your reservation.

Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero Tournament at the Gleason
The Gleason Public Library will host a Dance Dance Revolution (DDR)/Guitar Hero Tournament on Friday, April 18th, from 6:30-9:30pm for 5th-8th graders.  In this double elimination tournament, everyone is guaranteed a chance to play ONE game twice before eliminations begin, based on the number of perfect points/hits. The tournament will be run by Beth Gallaway, a freelance consultant specializing in teen library services. Snacks and drinks – as well as prizes to top finishers – will be provided.  A reading corner and board games will also be at the event.

Research has demonstrated that playing rhythm games improves pattern recognition skills, especially in ADHD students, and offers an aerobic workout that gets the heart rate up to 140 beats per minute. Schools in West Virginia, Kansas and California are implementing DDR and similar video games into the physical education curriculum. Video games meet developmental needs of teens, providing opportunities for social interaction, physical activity, creative expression, and building self-esteem. DDR is a safe and fun game; however, participants play this game at their own risk. The Library cannot be responsible for participants' health or fitness.

This program was selected by TOGA (Teens of Gleason Advisors), the library's teen advisory board, and is made possible by an Equal Access grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

This event is free and open to all 5th-8th graders. Registration is ongoing and occurs at the library reference desk.  Participants must specify either DDR or Guitar Hero at time of registration and pick up a permission slip to be returned before April 18th; the first forty (40) players to return a signed permission slip will be eligible for participation.

To learn more about this and other library events, please visit www.gleasonlibrary.org or call 978-369-4898.
