Dear Parents,
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Joyce Mehaffey as the new middle school principal. Please see the press release in the “School Events/Information” section to read more about Dr. Mehaffey.
Money is on our minds at CPS as we continue to discuss budget needs for next year and hear about the suffering of our friends in our Africa.
On the local level, we are working to come forward with a budget supported by all Town boards. Meetings continue with the School Committee, Finance Committee, and Selectmen to determine a budget agreeable to all parties. Please do follow these discussions by attending meetings, watching the cable broadcast, or reading the notes.
The Building Committee is working on a timeline for the Spalding project. We will bring this forward the plan to the Selectmen in March for their approval as we continue to work with the MSBA to secure funding.
Mr. Darasz has received word from our friends in Kenya that the recent riots have impacted our sponsored students, their families and their school. One of our sponsored students, Kenneth Ngetich, lost his father when he was shot by police along Eldoret-Nairobi road while he was walking to a shopping center. Many residents were hit hard by the violence and have left the area. Many of the parents of the African students have lost businesses, as they are farmers who sell their produce to the local people; others have had their fields destroyed. Our African friends are struggling to survive, and local schools are closing due to severely limited resources. Peter Darasz and his class will be collecting monetary donations to send over immediately to help out. If you would like to join Mr. D and me in making a donation, please make the check payable to the KIMbia Foundation and deliver the check to the office or Mr. D’s classroom. Should you wish to learn more, please access the website http://kimbia.net/.
Reading the news from Kenya reminds me of how fortunate we are to live in a country and community where we are safe and protected. While we struggle to bring forth an approved budget, it gives us perspective as to what is most important: our family, friends and safety. It is difficult to believe that every child in the world still does not have the right to attend school.
Sincerely,
Marie Doyle
Dear Carlisle Families,
It is hard to believe that more than six of almost ten months of the school year have been completed! March has come in like a lion with yet another beautiful snowstorm, thankfully this time on a Friday evening with children safely tucked in bed without the worry of a slippery commute in the morning. We begin our first round of MCAS testing from March 24-April 3. Much work has been done by curriculum coordinators, teachers, and administrators in reviewing our scores from last year. We find that these standardized tests provide valuable data in determining what is being taught in our school according to our state standards and district benchmarks. Concentrating on vertical and horizontal articulation of the curriculum to address gaps and focusing on executive functioning structures we can add to strengthen students organization and structure through our professional development this year has been a rewarding and collegial experience for all of us. More importantly, these standardized tests (designated as the most rigorous in the nation) assess what students are learning and inform our faculty where we are hitting the mark (much of the time at the very top of districts statewide) and where we need to concentrate greater effort in teaching specific concepts or developing more explicit skill building.
Habits of mind have also become important considerations upon review of our MCAS scores. The amount of time students spent assessing what was truly asked in questions, following directions, providing thorough responses, and investing quality effort, have all played a role in scores obtained. The collective thinking of our professionals led us to address these needs from within the curriculum, building on the skills and habits of mind and emphasizing or reteaching concepts through the existing curriculum rather that making this an “add-on curriculum” or teaching test taking techniques in isolation. We believe this has been a productive learning experience for professionals and students alike and look forward to a successful upcoming *MCAS season with a focus on pride and ease in demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained over the year.
*Please note during MCAS season:
If there is any chance your child will be unavoidably absent during the testing windows due to necessary medical or other reasons, please contact us as much as possible in advance so that we may apply for an exemption with the D.O.E. We would also appreciate your cooperation in not planning family vacations during the MCAS testing periods. Any student who does not complete one or more specific tests due to unexcused absences (vacations, etc.) during the testing windows of March 24-April 3 and May 12-28, automatically receives a zero on that/those tests. When this happens, it does not reflect a child’s true ability. Further, these zeros do count in determining our average district scores.
Sincerely,
Patrice Hurley and Jim Halliday
New Middle School Principal Hired
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Joyce Mehaffey has accepted the position of Middle School Principal. All of her references gave high praise that included feedback on her intelligence, humor, dedication and loyalty. Parents, staff, and students gave excellent feedback during her visit to the Carlisle School on February 28th. Many thanks to the hiring committee for identifying this exemplary leader to join us in Carlisle: Patrice Hurley, Karen Slack, Jim Halliday, Tracy Malone, Cheryl Hay, Kathy Horan, Jim Zimmerman, Holly Salemy, and Kris Tocci. Joyce will begin work in Carlisle on July 7th; please join us in welcoming her to our community. We will hold a reception for parents in the fall so community members may have a chance to meet her.
Joyce has a very strong background across a spectrum of educational experiences. Since 1998 she has worked in the Greenfield, MA school district, where she currently she serves as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. From 1998 to 2004, she was the principal at the Newton Elementary School in Greenfield. Prior to her Greenfield tenure, Joyce worked as a special educator and school psychologist in New Jersey and in Northfield, MA. Her educational background includes master’s degrees in teaching and education and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. She holds Massachusetts Department of Education certification as a principal for grades K-8, as well as school psychology and as a superintendent. Her references also indicate that she possesses particular strengths in curriculum leadership and interpersonal relationships with both adults and students.
Thank you to all school community members who participated in the principal selection process. We anticipate a smooth transition as the administrative team looks forward to working closely with Joyce to maintain and build on the excellence of the Carlisle Public Schools.
